Hip and elbow dysplasia are two of the most common — and most talked-about — orthopedic issues in dogs, especially the big, athletic ones. And unlike bloat, this usually isn't a sudden emergency. It's more of a slow reveal, one that can start showing itself in a wobbly puppy or sneak up on a dog well into middle age.
The upside: this is one of the more manageable conditions on the list. There's a wide range of treatment options, from lifestyle changes all the way up to full joint replacement, and most dogs with dysplasia go on to live comfortable, active lives. Knowing what you're looking at — and looking for — just gets you there faster.

Treatment
Treatment depends heavily on your dog's age, severity, and how much daily life is actually being affected. It's not one-size-fits-all, and it's not automatically "straight to surgery."
Conservative management is often the starting point, especially for mild cases:
Weight management, since extra pounds are extra pressure on a joint that's already struggling
Controlled exercise — think steady, low-impact activity like swimming or leash walks, not weekend-warrior bursts
Joint supplements
Anti-inflammatory medication or pain management, as prescribed by your vet
Physical therapy or rehab
Surgical options come into play for more severe cases or dogs who aren't improving on conservative treatment. Depending on age, size, and severity, that can include procedures to improve the joint's alignment in young dogs, a femoral head osteotomy (removing the ball of the joint so scar tissue forms a functional, pain-free false joint), or a full hip replacement — which is exactly what it sounds like, and yes, it's a real and fairly common procedure for dogs with severe hip dysplasia. Elbow dysplasia has its own set of surgical approaches, depending on which part of the joint is involved.
Your vet will walk you through which route actually fits your dog, rather than which one sounds the most dramatic.
What Can It Cost?
Conservative management is the more budget-friendly path, though supplements, medication, and rehab sessions add up over the life of the dog. Surgery is the bigger expense, often running into the thousands, with joint replacement and specialty procedures landing at the higher end. Cost depends on your location, whether you need a specialist, which procedure fits your dog, and any follow-up care or physical therapy after surgery.
